OpenSuperQPlus is a European Quantum Flagship project bringing together over 28 academic and industrial partners from 10 countries to develop scalable and reliable quantum systems based on superconductors. Coordinated by Forschungszentrum Jülich, the project aims to build a 100-qubit quantum computer made in Europe and lay the foundation for scaling to 1000 qubits.

Central to this effort is a design and fabrication platform for high-quality quantum chips and their integration into advanced multi-chip modules. The project also develops enabling hardware and software, as well as testing and benchmarking tools. In addition to these technological objectives, OpenSuperQPlus fosters the deployment of quantum technologies and the critical consideration of ethical questions associated with future commercialisation.

Open New Pathways to Quantum Advantage

Quantum advantage refers to the ability of quantum computers to outperform classical computers. The successful development of a 100-qubit quantum computer within OpenSuperQPlus would enable the solution of highly complex computational problems that are beyond the reach of classical machines, such as financial crash prediction, logistics, and optimisation challenges. As indicated by its title, OpenSuperQPlus pursues this goal through an open science approach, treating knowledge and data sharing as integral parts of its methodology.

In this way, the consortium aims to enhance the quality and efficiency of quantum computing in Europe and educate the next generation of quantum scientists and developers. In addition to technical expertise, the consortium also benefits from a philosophical perspective that highlights the ethical and political implications that quantum computers may bring about.

Quantum Hardware and Software Made in Europe

OpenSuperQPlus brings together leading European expertise across all components of a quantum computer, ranging from quantum engineering and control electronics to software integration. The consortium aims to realise large-scale superconducting quantum computers capable of demonstrating quantum advantage and enabling fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Through close collaboration, the partners are developing fully integrated quantum computing systems that combine a complete hardware and software stack. Based on superconducting circuits, the hardware includes key technological infrastructure such as microwave electronics, control systems, and cryogenics. The software stack spans the entire workflow, from user access down to low-level control.

The ultimate goal is to deliver a general-purpose quantum computer tightly integrated with classical computing infrastructure. In addition, the project provides a comprehensive testing and benchmarking suite to support the evaluation of quantum system performance.

OpenSuperQPlus is developing a scalable European quantum computer based on superconducting technology, targeting 100 qubits and beyond, while building the hardware, software, and ethical foundations for future quantum deployment.
