A central piece of infrastructure for the transformation of Saarland’s steel industry is taking shape. Construction has started on a 17 km hydrogen pipeline connecting France with the Dillingen steel site. The pipeline, operated by Creos is expected to supply hydrogen for steel production in 2029.
The infrastructure is closely linked to Power4Steel, the large-scale decarbonisation programme of SHS Stahl-Holding-Saar, Dillinger and Saarstahl. Through Power4Steel, conventional steel production is being progressively replaced by a new route combining direct reduction and electric arc furnaces. Hydrogen will play an important role in reducing the associated CO₂ emissions.
The new pipeline forms part of the cross-border mosaHYc hydrogen network, which is designed to connect hydrogen producers and industrial users across the German-French border region and supply the Power4Steel transformation in Dillingen. For Saarland, this marks an important step in turning industrial decarbonisation plans into concrete infrastructure, linking the region’s steel transformation with emerging cross-border hydrogen value chains.
