NutriLOC, a new Horizon Europe research and innovation project, has begun developing sustainable nutrition solutions for children affected by malnutrition in Africa. Coordinated by the University of Helsinki, the €4 million, four-year initiative brings together partners from Africa and Europe.
The project will develop and assess therapeutic and supplementary foods based on locally available ingredients, including fish, legumes, cereals, spirulina and mycoprotein. By connecting nutrition research with local production and supply chains, NutriLOC aims to improve access to appropriate nutrition while creating opportunities for stronger local economies and long-term self-reliance.
NutriLOC is a strong addition to the FOOD & NATURE innovation ecosystem: it shows how food innovation can unite scientific research, local entrepreneurship and capacity building to create solutions that work within—and strengthen—regional food systems.
The consortium will meet for its official kick-off meeting in Accra, Ghana, on 2–3 October 2026.
